the piece

Direction: Peter Palasthy, Servane Ducorps, Juliette Prillard
Devised and Performed by: Martine Eichenberger, Julie Beauvais
Masks: Loïc Nébréda

Throughout the Autumn of 2006, le Collectif performed "emir et cador" in community centres for immigrants newly arrived in Switzerland. This original piece of visual theatre was performed for those frequenting the centres, those living in the local areas as well as those working in the centres.

On a road somewhere outside a town - the tentative meeting of one foreigner with another. They put down their suitcases, unload their baggage and little by little, a teacher - student relationship of sorts develops between Emir and Cador. In watching the establishment of their rituals, their laws, their boundaries, one begins to wonder who is dependant on whom - the master-teacher on the servant-student or vice versa? From their tentative meeting, through their negotiated peace to the inevitability of conflict … what else can one do but laugh?

Support: Bureau de l'Intégration des Etrangers Genève, Département des Affaires Sociales, des Ecoles et de l'Environnement de la Ville de Genève, Commune de Vandoeuvres, Département des Affaires Culturelles de la Ville de Genève, Loterie Romande, Services Industriels de Genève.
